Does Your School Logo Make the Grade? These 3 Tips Can Help.

A logo is the the graphic mark your school can use to attract instant public recognition. Effective logo designs are simple and memorable, most often using a single image to capture the essence of your school. Design may seem like a whole other ballpark, but it doesn’t have to be.

If you’re at a loss for perfecting the right logo for your school, use these three ideas to guide you along.

1. Simple is better.

You may think a logo has to be complex to represent all the components of your school. However, a complex design does the complete opposite. Think of Nike’s logo for example; it’s simple yet you can always spot it right away. A clean and simple logo is easy to understand and leaves a lasting impression.

Another important factor to take into consideration is how well your logo is able to be recreated. Your logo will be used in a variety of places, but it may not turn out as well on certain fabrics or surfaces. For example, it may fit nicely on your website but not look the same on a football jersey. Simple logos will transfer nicely and limit any major problems.

2. Make it memorable.

Everyone might know the name of your school, but your logo needs to make it easily recognized on a visual level. A logo should cut through the clutter and be memorable. A lot of successful companies have had the same logos for years with slight changes to color or shape, but never too many variations that make it unrecognizable.

What is your school known for? If you’re all about growth, use a design that incorporates green. If you focus on academic success, try colors like yellow or gold. There are plenty of books, infographics, blogs, etc. that go further in depth behind the meaning of certain colors and shapes. Understand what makes your school different from the rest, identify your brand, and run with it.

3. What’s the story?

This can be the hardest part in the designing process, but it’s also one of the most important. Telling a story through your logo is what gives it purpose and helps shine a light on your values. A successful logo uses simple designs and visually speaks what you want your school to express.

If your story is built on fostering development, the logo may have hands holding one another or show individuals helping each other. Schools who focus on student achievement may want to incorporate a stack of books, diploma, or students climbing a pathway of success. When it comes time to designing the logo, it’s important to establish a clear understanding of your mission so you’re able to reflect it accurately. Whatever your story may be, your logo needs to communicate it.

A good school logo is as much a science as it is an art. Designing the right logo for your school can be tough. Luckily there are people who know it all. In need of a fresh design? Get in touch.
